What a Fall Wedding on the Upper West Side Actually Looks Like — Flower by Flower
There’s a particular light in October on the Upper West Side. It comes in low across the Hudson in the late afternoon, catches the turning leaves in Riverside Park, and gives everything a warmth that summer never quite manages. Couples who marry in the fall tend to want their flowers to match that feeling — deeper, warmer, a little more grounded than a spring wedding.
After years of arranging flowers for weddings in this neighborhood, we’ve learned that fall gives a florist more to work with than people expect. Here’s how we think about it, flower by flower.
The palette shifts, but it doesn’t have to go dark
The instinct with fall weddings is to reach for burgundy and rust and call it a day. Those tones are beautiful, but a room full of nothing but deep reds can feel heavy. The arrangements we love most for autumn keep one foot in warmth and one in softness — a burgundy dahlia next to a blush garden rose, or coral peonies against green hydrangea rather than more red.
Our Peach Romance arrangement is a good example of that balance. The peach garden roses read as autumnal without turning somber, which makes them work as well for a ceremony as for the reception tables afterward.
Peonies in fall? Sometimes, and they’re worth it
Most people think of peonies as a spring flower, and for the most part they’re right. But there’s a fall peony season — shorter, less predictable — and when they’re available, they bring something no other flower quite does. If your date lands in early October and you love them, tell your florist early. We can often source them, but not at the last minute.

Texture matters more in fall than in any other season
Spring flowers can carry a wedding on color alone. Fall asks for texture. Seeded eucalyptus, dried grasses, ranunculus with their tight layered petals, the occasional branch — these are what make an autumn arrangement feel intentional rather than just seasonal. When we design for a fall wedding, we’re thinking as much about what the arrangement feels like to look at closely as about its color from across the room.
Think about your venue’s light
This is the part couples rarely consider. A pre-war building with big windows on Central Park West takes flowers very differently than a candle-lit downtown loft. Fall weddings often run later into the evening, which means more of your reception happens under warm artificial light. Whites and pale blush can wash out; deeper tones and rich textures hold up. We always ask about the venue and the time of day before we finalize a palette, and it changes the design more than you’d think.
A note on timing
Fall is a busy wedding season in New York, and the best dates book early.
